Understanding Gambling Addiction

Gambling disorder is characterized by persistent, recurrent problematic gambling behaviour that causes significant distress or impairment – including financial damage, relationship breakdown, employment problems, legal issues, and profound shame. Gambling activates the brain’s reward system in ways similar to substance addiction: the near-miss, the anticipation of the win, and intermittent reinforcement create a powerful neurobiological pull that willpower alone cannot overcome. Gambling addiction rarely exists in isolation. It commonly co-occurs with depression, anxiety, ADHD, and substance use disorders – and is frequently a response to stress, emotional pain, or a need for escape and excitement that is not being met elsewhere. Understanding and addressing these co-occurring dimensions is essential to effective treatment.

Our Approach to Gambling Addiction Therapy

Gambling addiction therapy at Empire begins by creating a genuinely safe space – confidential, non-judgmental, and focused on understanding rather than confrontation. Many clients have been carrying the weight of their gambling in complete secrecy for years.

CBT is the primary evidence-based framework for gambling disorder. It addresses the cognitive distortions that sustain gambling, the high-risk situations and emotional states that trigger gambling urges, and the development of alternative coping and leisure activities.

We also address the practical dimensions of gambling’s impact – particularly financial stress, which is often overwhelming and itself a significant driver of further gambling through the urge to ‘win back’ what has been lost. Referrals to financial counselling are part of comprehensive gambling treatment.

Co-occurring conditions – depression, anxiety, ADHD, substance use – are identified and addressed alongside the gambling disorder, because untreated co-occurring conditions significantly undermine gambling recovery.

Common Questions About Gambling Addiction Therapy

Is gambling addiction really an addiction, or just a bad habit?

Gambling disorder is a recognized clinical diagnosis (DSM-5) with neurobiological mechanisms similar to substance addiction. It is not a bad habit or a lack of willpower – it is a complex condition requiring appropriate professional support.

I am in significant debt because of gambling. Can therapy help with that too?

Therapy addresses the psychological dimensions of gambling addiction and can help you manage the emotional distress of financial consequences. For financial dimensions directly, we can provide referrals to credit and financial counselling services.

My partner does not know about my gambling. Do I have to tell them?

What you share outside the therapy room is your decision. Therapy is confidential. Your therapist will explore the role that secrecy plays in maintaining the gambling and the potential role disclosure might play in your recovery – at your pace and without pressure.
