Understanding Addiction Changes Everything

What looks like a lack of willpower from the outside is almost always something much more complicated underneath. Substance use and compulsive behaviours develop as ways of managing pain, stress, trauma, or emotional needs that aren’t being met in any other way. That doesn’t make addiction less serious – but it does mean that judgment and shame are never part of the solution.

At Empire Psychotherapy in Hamilton, we take a compassionate, non-judgmental approach to addiction counselling. Whether you’re dealing with alcohol, substances, gambling, pornography, or other compulsive behaviours – our therapists help you understand what’s driving the pattern, address what’s underneath it, and build a life where the addiction has less and less power.

What Is Addiction Counselling?

Addiction counselling is a structured therapeutic process that helps individuals understand and address problematic patterns of substance use or compulsive behaviour. It explores the emotional, psychological, and relational factors that drive addictive patterns and builds the skills, insights, and support structures needed to create lasting change. Counselling is a critical component of long-term recovery, addressing the psychological roots that medical treatment alone cannot reach.

Alcohol Use

From problem drinking to alcohol dependency, our therapists help you understand your relationship with alcohol and develop a healthier one – whether that means moderation or abstinence.

Drug Use and Substance Dependence

Cannabis, opioids, stimulants, prescription medications – our therapists work with all forms of substance use without judgment.

Gambling and Financial Compulsions

Compulsive gambling and related financial behaviours carry significant shame – our therapists provide a genuinely safe space to address both the behaviour and what’s driving it.

Pornography and Compulsive Sexual Behaviours

These concerns are often difficult to talk about. Our therapists approach them with clinical expertise and complete respect for your privacy.

Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditions

Addiction and mental health concerns like depression, anxiety, and trauma almost always co-occur. We address both together for more effective, lasting recovery.

You don’t have to carry this on your own.

Reaching Out Takes Courage. We Will Handle the Rest With Care.

Many people wait years – sometimes decades – before seeking help for addiction. You don’t have to have hit rock bottom. Wherever you are in your relationship with substances or compulsive behaviours, our therapists are here to meet you without judgment and help you move forward.

Our Approach to Addiction Counselling

Effective addiction counselling doesn’t begin with confrontation – it begins with understanding. Our therapists use Motivational Interviewing to explore ambivalence about change, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to address the thoughts and patterns that sustain addictive behaviour, and trauma-informed care to address the underlying experiences that often drive substance use.

We work collaboratively with you to define what recovery looks like on your terms – whether that means abstinence, harm reduction, or something in between. We also address the relationships, stressors, and mental health challenges that intersect with addiction.

What to Expect in Sessions

  • A non-judgmental, confidential environment
  • Exploration of what is driving your patterns – not just the behaviour itself

Questions About Addiction Counselling

Do I have to be sober to start counselling?

No. You don’t need to be at any particular stage of recovery to start therapy. Many clients begin counselling while still actively using.

Is addiction counselling the same as a treatment program?

Not exactly. Our counselling works alongside or following formal treatment programs, addressing the psychological and emotional dimensions that structured programs may not have time to explore.

What if I'm not sure I have a problem?

That uncertainty itself is worth exploring with a therapist. You don’t need a formal diagnosis to benefit from counselling around your relationship with substances or behaviours.

Is my information kept confidential?

Absolutely. All sessions are fully confidential, subject to the standard limits that apply to all registered mental health professionals in Ontario.

Do you work with families of people struggling with addiction?

Yes. Family members are often significantly affected by a loved one’s addiction. We offer support for families navigating this – whether or not the person with the addiction is also in therapy.
