Understanding Sand Therapy for Young Children

Sand therapy – also called sandplay or sandtray therapy – is a therapeutic approach in which children create scenes in a tray of sand using a carefully curated collection of miniature figures, objects, and symbols. The sand itself is sensory and regulating; the miniatures provide a symbolic vocabulary through which children can express their inner world, process their experiences, and begin to find resolution. Sand therapy draws on Jungian and Kalffian traditions as well as contemporary trauma-informed frameworks. For young children, it is particularly powerful because it requires no verbal capacity – the child builds their world in the sand, and the therapist observes with skilled, attuned attention, facilitating without directing. What children create in the sandtray often reflects their inner emotional world with a vividness and depth that talk-based approaches cannot access – and doing so in a contained, symbolic space provides a sense of safety that direct discussion of difficult experiences often does not.

Our Approach to Sand Therapy for Young Children

Sand therapy at Empire is facilitated by therapists with specialized training in sandplay approaches. The sandtray room is equipped with a carefully curated collection of miniature figures and objects drawn from a wide range of categories – people, animals, buildings, natural elements, fantasy figures, vehicles, and more – providing a rich symbolic vocabulary for children to draw on.

Sessions are primarily child-led. The child is invited to create whatever they wish in the sand, with the therapist providing a warm, attentive, non-intrusive presence. The therapist observes carefully what is created, notes themes and patterns across sessions, and responds with attuned reflection.

For children with trauma histories, sandplay provides a particularly safe medium for trauma processing – the symbolic distance of the miniatures allows children to approach and work through difficult material without the direct confrontation that verbal approaches involve.

Parent consultation provides parents with understanding of the themes emerging in their child’s sandplay, education about how the approach works, and guidance on supporting the child’s emotional development at home. Complete confidentiality of the specific content of the child’s sandplay is maintained.

Common Questions About Sand Therapy Therapy

What kind of figures and objects are available in the sandtray?

Our sandplay collection includes hundreds of miniature figures and objects spanning people from all backgrounds and cultures, animals (domestic, wild, and fantastical), buildings and structures, vehicles, natural elements, symbolic and spiritual objects, and more. The breadth of the collection is important – it allows children to build whatever world they need to build.

My child just likes to bury and pour the sand. Is that still therapeutic?

Yes. The sensory experience of sand – burying, pouring, feeling its texture – is in itself therapeutic for many children. The therapeutic process is not limited to the creation of scenes. Whatever the child does in the sand has meaning and value.

Will my child be asked to explain what they created?

Sometimes a therapist may invite a child to share about what they have created – but this is gentle, optional, and never pressure. The therapeutic value of sandplay does not depend on verbal explanation, and forcing explanation can undermine the safety of the symbolic medium.

Is sand therapy evidence-based?

Sandplay therapy has a substantial body of case study and qualitative research, and a growing number of quantitative studies demonstrating its effectiveness. It is recognized by professional organizations including the International Society for Sandplay Therapy as a legitimate therapeutic approach requiring specialized training.
