Understanding ADHD in Children and Teens

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions in childhood – affecting roughly 5 to 8 percent of Canadian children. It involves differences in attention regulation, impulse control, and executive functioning that affect learning, behaviour, relationships, and emotional regulation. ADHD presents differently in different children. Some children are primarily inattentive – easily distracted, forgetful, and struggling to sustain focus – without significant hyperactivity. Others are primarily hyperactive-impulsive, acting before thinking and finding it difficult to stay still. Many children present with a combination of both. ADHD also frequently co-occurs with anxiety, learning disabilities, and mood difficulties – making comprehensive, individualized support essential.

Our Approach to ADHD Therapy for Kids and Teens

ADHD therapy at Empire is practical, engaging, and adapted to the child’s developmental stage and learning style. We know that traditional talk therapy – sitting still and discussing feelings for 50 minutes – is often not the right format for children with ADHD. Our therapists use a more active, varied approach that keeps sessions engaging while still delivering real clinical value.

For younger children, this might involve games, movement, creative activities, and structured skill-building exercises. For teenagers, sessions are more conversational but remain practical and skills-focused – addressing real challenges in school, relationships, and daily life.

We take a whole-child approach, which means we look at the child’s environment as well as their individual skills. School accommodation advocacy, communication with teachers, and working with parents to create ADHD-friendly home routines are all part of what we offer.

Parent consultation is central to ADHD therapy at Empire. Parents learn to understand their child’s neurological profile, respond to ADHD behaviour in ways that reduce conflict and build connection, advocate effectively with schools, and maintain consistency across home environments.

Common Questions About ADHD Therapy

Can therapy help ADHD without medication?

Yes, though for many children the combination is most effective. Therapy builds the skills, self-understanding, and emotional regulation that medication alone doesn’t address. For families who prefer to start without medication, therapy is a strong first step.

My child hates sitting still. How does therapy work for them?

Our therapists adapt their approach to the child. Sessions for children with ADHD are more active, varied, and engaging than traditional talk therapy – using games, creative activities, and movement alongside skill-building. Many children with ADHD actually enjoy therapy once they realize it doesn’t look like school.

My daughter has ADHD but isn't hyperactive. Does therapy look different for her?

Yes. Inattentive presentations often look very different – and are frequently missed or dismissed, especially in girls. Therapy for inattentive ADHD focuses on organizational strategies, reducing mental fatigue from sustained attention, managing perfectionism and anxiety that often co-occur, and building self-awareness.

How do you work with our child's school?

With your permission, our therapists can communicate with school staff, provide psychoeducation about ADHD, support accommodation requests, and help develop strategies that work across both home and school environments.
