Art therapy is the use of various forms of art to elicit dialogue between the client and therapist. Creative art is an effective medium for self-exploration and growth. Art therapy is not about creating good-looking art. Not much art skill is required in art therapy.
Even though art therapy is commonly used with children and adolescents, adults can also therapeutically benefit from engaging in the creative process. Human beings are inherently creative. However, modern society tends to value serious work more than play and creativity. The blockage of this important aspect of the human mind can cause people to be narrow-focused, feel stuck in a rigid mindset, and feel restricted and unfulfilled in life.
From the psychodynamic point of view, art is a channel for the expression of sexual and aggressive energies. It’s easier for certain unconscious materials to arise in the form of art than pure verbal therapy. This includes personal unconscious materials like shadow, trauma, unexpressed feelings, and collective unconsciousness like archetypes and complexes.
Creative art trains the brain’s ability for symbolization – detaching the original object from its symbols. When people distance themselves from the art they create, it’s easier for them to look inward and be more aware of their unconscious dynamics.
Creative art bypasses the rational/cognitive filter of the brain and engages the emotional/instinctual parts of the brain, which is highly undervalued in today’s productivity-driven societies.
Materials used in art therapy include pencil, crayons, watercolor, oil paint, sculpting clay, collage photos, and so on. Sometimes, music and drama can also be incorporated.
